Sunyani Technical University (STU) is a public technical university located in Sunyani, the capital of the Bono Region. Established as Sunyani Polytechnic in 1967 and upgraded to university status in August 2016, it specializes in technical and vocational education offering diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs in engineering, applied sciences, business, and technology fields. The institution serves as a key center for technical education in the middle belt of Ghana.
The institution was originally established in 1967 as Sunyani Polytechnic to provide middle-level technical and vocational training to meet Ghana's industrial manpower needs. Following decades of growth and academic development, it was converted to Sunyani Technical University in 2016 under the Technical Universities Act (Act 922), joining seven other polytechnics that were simultaneously elevated to university status. This transformation allowed the institution to award its own degrees and expand its research capabilities while maintaining its focus on hands-on technical education.
The university campus is located on the Sunyani-Berekum road, easily accessible from central Sunyani by taxi or private vehicle, approximately 5-10 minutes from the city center. Visitors can access the main administrative block during regular working hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM) for inquiries, though appointments are recommended for official visits. Prospective students are welcome to tour the campus facilities and should contact the admissions office in advance for guided campus tours.
Sunyani Technical University maintains a fully functional Teaching and Learning Innovation Centre equipped with modern fabrication tools and 3D printing technology, allowing students to transform their engineering designs into physical prototypes on campus.
