Ghana Visa & Entry Guide

Ghana operates an e-visa system through the Ghana Immigration Service. Most non-ECOWAS travellers must obtain a visa before arrival, though a visa-on-arrival and e-visa scheme are available for eligible nationalities.

Visa-free nationals

Citizens of the 15 ECOWAS member states (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, CΓ΄te d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, plus Ghana) enjoy visa-free entry. Kenya, Rwanda and the African Union laissez-passer holders also enjoy visa-free treatment.

e-Visa

Apply online at evisa.immigration.gov.gh. Typical processing time: 3-5 business days. Fee: USD 60-150 depending on single/multiple entry.

Visa on Arrival

Available at Kotoka International Airport (Accra) for select cases β€” business travellers with pre-approval from the Comptroller-General of Immigration. Apply through the GIS website before travel.

Required documents

Passport valid for at least 6 months, 2 passport photos, yellow-fever vaccination certificate, proof of funds/return ticket, hotel booking or letter of invitation.

African Diaspora

Ghana runs the 'Year of Return' (2019) and 'Beyond the Return' (2020-2030) initiatives β€” offering pathways to citizenship and indefinite right of residence for people of African descent. Enquire via the Office of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President.

Health & Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever vaccination is MANDATORY β€” bring your International Certificate of Vaccination (Yellow Card).
  • Recommended: Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid, Meningitis ACWY, Rabies (if rural travel), routine boosters.

  • Mobile money (MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money) is dominant β€” set up on a local SIM.
  • ATMs are plentiful in cities; Visa/Mastercard widely accepted at hotels, malls and fuel stations.
  • Always carry small denominations β€” useful at markets and tro-tros.
  • USD is widely accepted for bigger transactions but change back to Cedis for daily use.

Getting Around

  • Ghana Card enrolment is available at select missions β€” check the NIA website for scheduled exercises.
  • Send remittances via MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, or licensed partners like Western Union and MoneyGram.

Cultural Tips

  • Dress modestly when visiting chiefs' palaces, mosques and rural villages.
  • Photographing security installations, airports and some markets is restricted β€” always ask.
