Kintampo Waterfalls, also known as Sanders Falls, is one of Ghana's highest and most spectacular waterfalls, cascading approximately 70 meters over three distinct stages in the Bono East Region. Surrounded by lush tropical rainforest and accessible via a well-maintained stairway of over 200 steps, the falls offer natural pools perfect for swimming and relaxation. Strategically located along the Kumasi-Tamale highway, it serves as a popular rest stop and major ecotourism destination attracting thousands of visitors annually.
The falls were named Sanders Falls during the colonial era after a British district commissioner who worked in the area, though locals have always known them by their traditional name, Kintampo Waterfalls. The site has long been significant to local communities and became a protected tourist attraction following Ghana's independence as part of efforts to develop the country's natural heritage sites. In 2017, the site gained international attention following a tragic incident when a tree fell during a storm, leading to improved safety measures and infrastructure upgrades.
Kintampo Waterfalls is located approximately 4 kilometers north of Kintampo town center, easily accessible from the main Kumasi-Tamale highway with clear signage. The site is open daily from morning to evening, with entrance fees collected at the gate and facilities including parking, changing rooms, and local food vendors. Visitors should wear comfortable footwear for the descent, bring swimwear if planning to swim, and exercise caution on the steps especially during or after rain when they can be slippery.
The Kintampo area is considered the geographical center of Ghana, and the waterfalls serve as a natural midway rest stop for travelers journeying between the southern and northern regions of the country, making it one of the most conveniently located major tourist attractions in Ghana.
