The Savannah Regional Coordinating Council is the administrative body responsible for coordinating development activities and local government functions in the Savannah Region of Ghana. Located in Damongo, the regional capital, it serves as the central coordinating office for all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies within the region. The council oversees regional development planning, resource allocation, and implementation of government policies.
The Savannah Regional Coordinating Council serves as the principal administrative headquarters for Ghana's Savannah Region, established in 2019 as one of the country's newest regions. Based in Damongo, the regional capital, it coordinates all development initiatives, policy implementation, and local government operations across the region's seven districts. The council plays a pivotal role in facilitating communication between central government and district assemblies while overseeing regional planning and resource distribution.
The Savannah Regional Coordinating Council was established following the creation of the Savannah Region through a referendum in December 2018, which became operational in February 2019 as part of Ghana's decentralization initiative under President Nana Akufo-Addo. The region was carved out of the Northern Region to bring governance closer to the people and accelerate development in the area. Damongo was chosen as the regional capital due to its central location and historical significance as a traditional administrative center in the Gonja Kingdom.
The Savannah Regional Coordinating Council offices are located in Damongo town, accessible via road from Tamale (approximately 120 kilometers) or Kumasi. Visitors can access the council offices during regular government working hours, typically Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For official business or courtesy calls, it is advisable to schedule appointments in advance through the Regional Coordinating Director's office.
The Savannah Region is known as the 'Yam Capital' of Ghana, producing the highest quantity of yams in the country, and Damongo hosts an annual Yam Festival that celebrates this agricultural heritage with traditional dances, ceremonies, and feasting.
