Takoradi Harbour, commissioned in 1928, is Ghana's first deepwater seaport and one of the country's two main seaports alongside Tema. Located in Sekondi-Takoradi, it serves as a vital gateway for imports and exports, particularly cocoa, timber, and manganese, and is managed by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA). The port has undergone significant expansion and modernization over the decades to support Ghana's maritime trade and offshore oil and gas industry.
Takoradi Harbour, commissioned in 1928, is Ghana's first deepwater seaport and remains one of the nation's two principal commercial ports alongside Tema Port. Managed by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), it serves as the primary gateway for Western Region exports including cocoa, timber, manganese, and bauxite, while playing a crucial role in servicing Ghana's offshore oil and gas operations in the Jubilee and TEN fields. The port handles over 8 million tonnes of cargo annually and features modern container terminals, bulk cargo facilities, and specialized oil and gas service infrastructure.
Construction of Takoradi Harbour began in 1921 under British colonial administration to facilitate the export of minerals and agricultural produce from the Gold Coast, with official commissioning by Governor Sir Ransford Slater on July 28, 1928. The port's establishment transformed the sleepy fishing villages of Sekondi and Takoradi into a major commercial hub and Ghana's third-largest city. During World War II, Takoradi served as a critical Allied air transit point in the Takoradi Air Route, ferrying aircraft from the Americas to North Africa and the Middle East, while post-independence expansions in the 1960s, 1990s, and 2000s continually upgraded facilities to meet growing trade demands and accommodate Ghana's emerging oil economy.
Takoradi Harbour is an active commercial port with restricted public access for security and operational reasons; visitors typically require official business or prior authorization from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to enter port facilities. The harbor can be viewed from nearby public vantage points along Harbour Road and the Sekondi waterfront, while educational or business tours may be arranged by contacting GPHA offices in advance. The port area is located approximately 3 kilometers from Takoradi Market Circle and is accessible via taxi or rideshare services.
During World War II, Takoradi Harbour became the western terminus of the legendary Takoradi Air Route, where over 5,000 American-built aircraft were assembled, test-flown, and ferried across Africa to Allied forces in North Africa and the Middle Eastβa logistical feat that required transforming the port city into a massive aircraft assembly and maintenance base between 1940 and 1943.
