Capital of the Eastern Region, nicknamed 'Kof Town'. Known for bead markets and mountain scenery.
Koforidua, affectionately called 'Kof Town', is the capital of Ghana's Eastern Region and serves as a major commercial hub in the southeastern part of the country. Situated approximately 83 kilometers north of Accra, the city is renowned for its vibrant bead-making industry, colorful flower farms, and stunning mountainous landscape dominated by the Akwapim-Togo ranges. It serves as the administrative and economic center for the New Juaben Traditional Area.
Koforidua was established in the late 19th century when New Juaben settlers, led by their paramount chief, migrated from the Ashanti Region following conflicts during the Ashanti civil wars of the 1870s-1880s. The name 'Koforidua' is believed to derive from 'Okofo ne dua' meaning 'brave man and stick' in Twi, commemorating a warrior who defended the early settlement. The city grew rapidly as a commercial center during the colonial era and was designated regional capital when the Eastern Region was created in 1958.
Koforidua is easily accessible from Accra via the 83-kilometer Accra-Kumasi Highway, with regular tro-tro and bus services taking approximately 1.5-2 hours. The city center features the bustling Koforidua Central Market, bead shops along the main streets, and nearby Boti Falls (25km) for nature excursions. Accommodation ranges from budget hotels to mid-range guesthouses, with the city serving as an excellent base for exploring Eastern Region attractions.
Koforidua is nicknamed the 'Flower City' because it produces over 60% of Ghana's commercial flowers, with numerous roadside flower sellers creating colorful displays that line the city's main thoroughfares, especially during festive seasons.
