The hospital was established to serve the Volta Region before Oti Region was carved out in 2019 as part of Ghana's regional reorganization that created six new regions. Following the creation of Oti Region, the facility was elevated to regional hospital status to anchor healthcare delivery in the new region. The hospital has since undergone gradual expansion to meet the healthcare needs of the region's approximately 600,000 residents spread across rural and peri-urban communities.
The hospital is located in Dambai town, accessible via the main roads connecting to Kete Krachi and Jasikan. Visitors can reach Dambai from Accra via Hohoe or through Kete Krachi from Yeji. As a public healthcare facility, the hospital operates 24/7 with outpatient services available during regular business hours and emergency services round the clock. Patients are advised to bring NHIS cards if enrolled for subsidized care.
