Ananse Intelligence · Summary

Accra's Central Business District (CBD) is the commercial and administrative heart of Ghana — a dense cluster of banks, trading houses, government ministries and courts packed into the historic core of the city around High Street, the Makola area and the old colonial quarter of Victoriaborg. **Where it is and what's in it.** The CBD runs roughly from the old Jamestown direction through Tudu and Makola, along High Street and Kojo Thompson Road, up to the ministries enclave around the Flagstaff House side and the Kinbu/High Court district. It holds the Bank of Ghana, the big commercial banks (GCB, Ecobank, Stanbic, Absa, CalBank and others), the Ghana Stock Exchange, the Ministry of Finance and the many ministries clustered in the government office zone, the High Court and the Law Courts, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly offices, and the headquarters of major state bodies. Makola Market — the great women's trading market — sits right in the middle of it all, which is what gives the CBD its distinctive character: formal finance and government sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with one of West Africa's most vibrant open markets. **Why it matters.** This is where Ghana's money and its paperwork meet. Cocoa, gold, oil revenues, bank clearing, company registration, court business, and the daily hustle of thousands of traders all converge here. The area around Rawlings Park, Opera Square and Tudu is the electronics and wholesale hub; High Street carries the historic commercial houses and the old colonial-era buildings. **Practical notes.** Traffic in the CBD is famously heavy — most people use Trotro, taxi or the Aayalolo/BRT services, and parking is scarce. The area is walkable but crowded, and it's wise to keep valuables close. Business hours are typically 8am–5pm on weekdays; Makola and the trading streets start much earlier and run later. As the Akan say, *"Abusua bɛka sɛ yɛnkɔ"* — the family decides where the journey goes; and in Accra, the journey almost always passes through the CBD. If you're planning a visit for business registration, banking, or a court matter, tell me which and I'll point you to the right street and office cluster.
