**Achimota Forest Reserve** is a 494-hectare (about 1,220-acre) protected urban forest in the heart of Accra, straddling the boundary between the Accra Metropolitan Area and the Ga East Municipality β Ghana's most famous and most contested green lung. **What it is and where it came from.** The reserve began life in the 1920s as a plantation established by the colonial Forestry Department on land that had been acquired from the Owoo and other Ga families. It was gazetted as a forest reserve in 1930, and over the decades the planted species β teak, cassia, mahogany, cedrela and others β matured into a genuine urban woodland. It sits just west of the Achimota School campus and the University of Ghana's Legon campus, and it is the largest remaining green space inside Accra. The Forestry Commission manages it under the Timber Resources Management Act, and it is legally a protected forest reserve, not ordinary state land. **Why it matters.** The reserve is Accra's lungs β it moderates temperature, absorbs runoff, hosts birds and small mammals, and buffers the city against the flooding that plagues low-lying suburbs. It also holds the **Achimota Golf Club** and the **Achimota Ecological Park**, and it is a beloved walking and jogging ground for residents of Achimota, Legon, Dome and Tesano. Culturally, it is bound up with the memory of Achimota School, one of the great institutions of Ghanaian education. **The controversy.** In 2021 the reserve became a national flashpoint when the government, under the Akufo-Addo administration, moved to reclassify roughly 361 acres and grant portions to the Forestry Commission and to a private developer linked to the Owoo family, with reported plans for a "Ramsar" eco-tourism project and other development. Ghanaians reacted with fury β #SaveAchimotaForest trended, civil society, the Ghana Institute of Architects and ordinary citizens marched, and the matter went to court. The Lands Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources defended the move as a boundary regularisation; critics called it a land grab dressed in green clothing. Litigation and public pressure slowed the scheme, and the reserve's legal status remained a live national debate through the transition to the Mahama administration in January 2025. **The proverb for it.** The Akan say *"SΙ dua bi te ase a, ΙnkyΙ na w'ahunu ne mfaso"* β if a tree stands, it is not long before you see its usefulness. Achimota Forest has stood for nearly a century, and Accra is only now learning exactly how much it needs it. If you want the very latest on the reserve β current court rulings, any 2026 government decisions, or the state of the ecological park today β tell me and I'll search deeper, because that part is moving and I won't guess at it.
Achimota School is one of Ghana's most prestigious secondary schools, founded in 1927 by Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg. Located in the Achimota Forest Reserve, the co-educational boarding institution has educated many of Ghana's leaders and distinguished citizens. The school is renowned for its academic excellence, discipline, and its motto 'Ut Omnes Unum Sint' (That All May Be One).

Achimota Forest Reserve is a protected ecological reserve located in northern Accra, spanning approximately 361 acres. Originally established in 1930, it serves as a vital green lung for the capital, providing ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation, and recreational space for residents. The forest has faced encroachment challenges but remains an important urban conservation area and educational site.
