Amedzofe is a small mountain town in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region, perched high on the slopes of Mount Gemi in the Avatime hills β and it holds the title of one of the highest human settlements in Ghana, sitting at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level. The town is the capital of the Avatime (Amedzofe) traditional area, home to the Avatime people, a Guan-speaking group whose language, Siya (Sideme), is one of Ghana's lesser-known indigenous tongues. The name itself comes from the Ewe phrase "Amedzofe," meaning "the place of the people" or "human settlement" β fitting for a community that has clung to these cool, misty ridges for centuries, farming cocoa, coffee, plantain and vegetables on terraced hillsides. The headline attraction is **Mount Gemi**, the second-highest peak in Ghana after Mount Afadja (Afadjato). A stone cross stands at its summit, erected by German missionaries in the late 19th century β the Bremen Mission established a station here in the 1880s, and Amedzofe became an early centre of Christianity and Western education in the Volta Region. From the top, on a clear day, you get a sweeping panorama: the Volta Region's rolling hills, Lake Volta glinting in the distance, and on the horizon the outline of Togo's mountains to the east. Other draws include the **Amedzofe Waterfalls** (a cool, forested cascade a short hike from town), the **Ote Falls**, and the **Avatime Hills canopy walkway** β one of Ghana's few canopy walks, suspended above the forest floor. The climate is a relief from the coastal heat: temperatures often drop to 18β20Β°C at night, and morning mist rolling over the ridges is part of the town's signature. Getting there: Amedzofe is about 30 km north-west of Ho, the Volta Regional capital, reachable by road through Kpando or Ho, then up the winding hill road. The town is a favourite for hikers, birdwatchers and anyone chasing Ghana's coolest, highest air. As the Akan say, *"Obi nnim nea ΙbΙyΙ"* β no one knows what tomorrow holds β but for Amedzofe, tomorrow looks much like today: quiet, green, and above the clouds.
