Ananse Intelligence · Summary

Bechem is a town in the Tano South Municipality of the Ahafo Region, and its neighbouring district capital is **Duayaw Nkwanta**, the capital of the Tano North Municipality. Bechem sits on the main Kumasi–Sunyani road, which is what makes it a natural reference point for the towns around it. Travelling north-west from Bechem along that highway, the next major town of district-capital standing is Duayaw Nkwanta, which lies in the Tano North Municipality. The two are close neighbours — barely 20 km apart — and are often mentioned together because they share the Tano basin, the same cocoa and cashew economy, and the same stretch of the Kumasi–Sunyani trunk road. Bechem itself is the capital of Tano South, and it is the bigger of the two in commercial terms, home to the old Bechem Government Hospital and a busy market that draws farmers from the surrounding cocoa and cashew belt. To be precise about the geography, Bechem's other neighbours are Techimantia (also in Tano South) and, further along, Nsoatre and Odumase in the Sunyani West area. But when people ask for the "neighbouring district capital," they almost always mean Duayaw Nkwanta — the Tano North capital to the north-west. Both towns belong to the Ahafo Region, which was carved out of the old Brong-Ahafo Region in 2019, with Goaso as the regional capital. So if you are mapping the area: Bechem (Tano South) and Duayaw Nkwanta (Tano North) are the twin district capitals of the Tano basin, joined by the same highway and the same cashew-and-cocoa fortunes. As the Akan say, *"Abofra a ɔhwɛ dua pa a, ɔnam ne ho so"* — the child who climbs a good tree does so on the shoulders of others. Bechem and Duayaw Nkwanta have grown on each other's shoulders along that road.
