**Bole** is one of the two great towns of the Savannah Region β the capital of **Bole District**, sitting in the far west of the region on the road to the Ivory Coast border, and the gateway to **Mole National Park**, Ghana's largest and most famous wildlife reserve. Bole is a **Gonja** town. The Gonja are one of the great northern kingdoms, founded in the 17th century by Ndewura Jakpa and his Mande horsemen, and Bole's traditional ruler β the **Bolewura** β is a senior chief within the Gonja Traditional Council, which is headed by the Yagbonwura at Damongo. The people speak **Gonja (Ngbanyito)**, and the town is a proud custodian of that heritage: the Damba festival, the fire festival, and the rich drumming and praise-singing traditions of the Gonja court are all alive here. Bole's modern significance is enormous. It is the **birthplace of President John Dramani Mahama** β he was born at Bole on 29 November 1958, and the town remains his home base and political heartland. That single fact has put Bole on the national map in a way few district capitals can claim. The Mahama family's compound at Bole is a place of pilgrimage for NDC faithful, and the town has benefited from a steady stream of development attention over the years. Economically, Bole is a **farming and trading town** β yam, maize, groundnut, cowpea, shea, and increasingly cashew, which has transformed the Savannah Region's cash economy. It is also a **mining-adjacent** town: the Bole area sits near gold-bearing ground, and small-scale and licensed mining activity has grown around it, bringing both money and the familiar environmental tensions. The Bole-Bamboi road and the town's position on the corridor toward Wa and the Ivorian border make it a natural trading hub for the western savannah. For the traveller, Bole is the **gateway to Mole**. Most visitors fly or drive to Tamale, then take the road west through Damongo to Bole, and from Bole it is a short run north to the Mole Motel and the park gates β elephants, antelope, buffalo, and the famous Mole walking safari. The **Bole airstrip** and the old **Bole Airport** (a colonial-era strip) have long been talked about for upgrade, precisely because of the tourism traffic. Culturally, Bole is also known for its **Gonja chieftaincy disputes** β like many northern traditional areas, succession to the Bolewura skin has at times been contested, and the Gonja Traditional Council has had to arbitrate. That is the ordinary, human politics of a living kingdom. So: Bole is a Gonja royal town, the capital of Bole District, the birthplace of President Mahama, a growing cashew-and-gold economy, and the front door to Mole National Park. In the Savannah Region, Damongo is the administrative capital β but Bole is the cultural and political heavyweight of the west. As the Akan say, *"YΙn nyΙ adwuma koro"* β we do not do the same work; each town has its own calling. Bole's calling is royal, presidential, and wild.
