Ananse Intelligence Β· Summary

Boti Falls is one of Ghana's most beloved natural attractions β€” a twin waterfall in the Eastern Region, tucked in the Yilo Krobo District near the town of Boti, roughly 17 km northeast of Koforidua and about an hour and a half's drive from Accra. **The falls themselves.** Boti is actually two waterfalls that sit close together. The main fall, on the Boti River, drops about 30 metres into a plunge pool below. The second fall, sometimes called the "female" fall, is smaller and only flows strongly in the rainy season β€” which is why Ghanaians say the falls are "married." When both are running, usually from around June to September at the peak of the rains, the sight is spectacular; in the dry season the smaller one can slow to a trickle. The pool at the base is swimmable, and the cool spray makes it a favourite escape from the heat. **The legend.** Local Krobo tradition holds that the falls were discovered by a hunter who followed a wounded antelope to the spot. The name is tied to the Krobo word for the area, and the twin falls are often described as a pair of lovers β€” one male, one female β€” which is why the site carries a romantic reputation and draws couples, picnickers and photographers. **The umbrella rock and the climb.** Just above the falls is the famous Umbrella Rock β€” a huge boulder balanced on a narrow base, shaped like an open umbrella, offering a panoramic view over the surrounding hills and the Krobo plains. Getting there involves a guided hike up a fairly steep path, usually with a local guide from the Boti community. The descent to the falls themselves is via a long flight of steps β€” several hundred of them β€” so comfortable shoes are essential. **Practical notes.** There's an entrance fee for Ghanaian and foreign visitors, and guides are available at the gate. The best time to visit is the rainy season for full flow, though the dry season is easier for the climb. The site is a popular stop on Eastern Region tours that also take in Koforidua, the Krobo bead market at Agomanya, and the Aburi Botanical Gardens. Facilities are basic β€” a few sheds and changing areas β€” so bring water, snacks and a change of clothes if you plan to swim. As the Akan say, *"Abe dua a eye den na wotu no"* β€” it's the strong tree that gets cut; the falls have endured because the community protects them. If you're planning a trip, go early in the day to beat the crowd and the midday heat.
