Ananse Intelligence Β· Summary

**Bui National Park** is a protected area in the Bono Region of Ghana, straddling the Black Volta about 100–120 km northwest of Kintampo, and it is best known for its population of hippopotamus in the river and for the wooded savanna that shelters a wide range of wildlife. The park was gazetted in 1971 and covers roughly 1,800 square kilometres, making it one of Ghana's larger protected areas. It sits on the boundary between the Bono Region and the Savannah Region, with the Black Volta forming its western edge and the Bui Gorge β€” the site of the Bui Dam, completed around 2013 β€” cutting through its southern portion. The terrain is a mix of rolling hills, riverine forest along the Volta, and open woodland and grassland on the uplands. Wildlife is the draw. The hippos are the signature species, and the river corridor also supports crocodiles and a rich birdlife β€” hornbills, kingfishers, herons, fish eagles and the like. On land you find olive baboons, green and vervet monkeys, warthogs, bushbuck, duiker, kob, waterbuck, and occasional reports of leopard and buffalo in the more remote sections. The park is also home to a good number of butterfly species and is a recognised Important Bird Area. Culturally, the area around Bui is home to communities of the Bono and Guan peoples, and the park's creation displaced some settlements along the river. The Bui Dam project brought roads, power infrastructure and a resettlement programme, and today the dam and its reservoir are a prominent feature of the landscape β€” though the reservoir's creation altered some of the riverine habitat the hippos depend on. Practically, Bui is one of Ghana's less-visited parks β€” there is no large-scale tourism infrastructure, and access is mainly by road from Wenchi or Kintampo, with the dam area providing the most reliable entry point. For a serious wildlife or birding trip it rewards the effort, but it is not a casual day out like Mole or Kakum. As the Akan say, *"Kwae a wo nni mu a, na w'ani gye ho"* β€” a forest you have not entered is the one you admire from afar. Bui is that kind of place: better known by reputation than by visitors, and all the more worth the journey for it.
