Coronation Park is the historic public recreational ground in the heart of Sunyani, the capital of the Bono Region — a wide open green space that has served for decades as the town's main gathering point for parades, durbars, sports, funerals, church conventions and public celebrations. Its name comes from the coronation tradition: such parks across Ghana and the old British Empire were laid out as ceremonial grounds where chiefs were enstooled or crowned, and where visiting dignitaries were received. In Sunyani, Coronation Park sits close to the central business district, near the Sunyani Municipal Assembly and the main lorry station area, which is why it has always been the natural venue for anything that draws a crowd. Independence Day parades, farmers' day events, political rallies, school sports festivals, open-air church services and the funerals of prominent Bono citizens have all been held there. Culturally it matters because Sunyani is the seat of the Sunyani Traditional Area, under the Sunyanhene, and the park is one of the few neutral, non-stool public spaces where the traditional council, the municipal assembly and ordinary residents can all converge. For the Bono Region — Ghana's "food basket" — it has also hosted agricultural shows and trade fairs that showcase cocoa, cashew, maize and yam from the surrounding districts. Practically, if you are visiting: it is a free, open, walk-in space rather than a ticketed attraction, best enjoyed in the cooler hours of the early morning or late afternoon. It is a short walk from Sunyani's central market and the Cocoa Board area, and it makes a good starting point for a walk around the town centre. If you want to confirm whether a specific event is being held there on a given date, the Sunyani Municipal Assembly is the body that issues permits for use of the grounds. As the Akan say, *"Abofoo nni kwae a, ɛyɛ sare"* — when the animals leave the forest, it becomes a plain. Coronation Park is Sunyani's forest: it is only truly alive when the people gather on it.
