Ananse Intelligence · Summary

Fort Orange is the small Dutch fort at Sekondi, in Ghana's Western Region — one of the chain of European trading forts that once dotted the Gold Coast, and today a modest, weathered landmark rather than a major tourist site like Elmina or Cape Coast Castle. **Origins.** The Dutch built Fort Orange at Sekondi around 1642 (some accounts date the first structure to the 1630s–1640s), naming it after the House of Orange, the ruling house of the Dutch Republic. It was part of the Dutch West India Company's push to control the gold and, later, slave trade along the coast, sitting between their bigger strongholds at Elmina and Axim. The site had earlier been contested with the English and the local Ahanta and Fante peoples, and the fort changed hands or was attacked more than once in the turbulent seventeenth century. **What it was for.** Like its sister forts, Fort Orange served as a trading post — a place to barter for gold, ivory and, in the darker era, to hold enslaved Africans before shipment. Sekondi itself was a significant coastal trading town, and the fort anchored Dutch commercial influence there until the Dutch withdrew from the Gold Coast in 1872, when their remaining forts (including Elmina) were ceded to the British. **Today.** Fort Orange survives in Sekondi as a small, partly ruined structure — much less intact and much less visited than the UNESCO-listed forts at Elmina and Cape Coast. It stands as a reminder that Sekondi, now twinned with Takoradi as the twin-city capital of the Western Region, was once a node in the European scramble for West African trade. If you're planning to visit, it's worth pairing with the nearby Sekondi–Takoradi harbour area and the Western Regional Museum, and asking locally for access, since the fort is not always formally open to the public. A fitting Akan thought: *"Abofoo nni gyidie"* — the hen has no faith — a reminder that the old coastal forts, however quiet today, once sat at the centre of a violent and far-reaching trade.
