The Freedom Shrine in Ho is a memorial cenotaph standing in the heart of the Volta Regional capital, erected to honour the men and women of the Volta Region — and Ghanaians generally — who fell in the two World Wars and in the struggles that built the nation. It sits in the Ho town centre, close to the main lorry station and municipal office area, and it is the focal point of Ho's annual remembrance and civic ceremonies. The name follows a British Commonwealth tradition: after 1918 towns across the Empire raised "shrines of freedom" or war memorials listing their fallen. Ho's version, like Cape Coast's and Accra's Cenotaph at the Christiansborg area, carries the names of local soldiers — many Volta Region men served in the Gold Coast Regiment of the Royal West African Frontier Force, fighting in the East African campaign (Togoland, Kamerun, Tanganyika) in 1914–18 and in Burma and East Africa in 1939–45. The shrine also became a natural gathering point for political rallies in the independence era, given Ho's closeness to Nkrumah's Volta connections. Today the Freedom Shrine is where the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, the Ho Municipal Assembly, the traditional authorities under the Asogli State (the Agbogbomefia's stool), and veterans' associations lay wreaths on Remembrance Day (11 November) and during other national commemorations. It is a modest but dignified structure — a cenotaph-style monument rather than a building — and it functions as a landmark for directions in central Ho, the way the Clock Tower works in Kumasi or the Roundabout in Tamale. If you are planning a visit, it is an easy stop while walking the Ho central business district — combine it with the Ho Central Market, the Volta Regional Museum nearby, and the Asogli State Palace. For any very recent restoration, re-dedication, or event at the shrine, the Ho Municipal Assembly and the Volta Regional Coordinating Council would be the authoritative sources; my account above is the stable historical and civic picture. As the Akan say, *"Abakɔsɛm yɛ kanea a ɛkyerɛ yɛn kwan"* — history is the lamp that lights our path. The Freedom Shrine is one of those small lamps Ho keeps burning in its own square.
