Ananse Intelligence · Summary

The Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) operates the country's gas value chain from the Western Region, with its main facilities clustered around Atuabo in the Ellembelle District and the offshore Jubilee and TEN fields. The company was incorporated in July 2011 as a wholly state-owned entity under the Ministry of Energy, with a mandate to build, own and operate the infrastructure for gathering, processing, transporting and marketing Ghana's natural gas. The flagship facility is the **Atuabo Gas Processing Plant**, commissioned in 2014 and formally inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama in 2015. Sitting on 100 acres near the coastal town of Atuabo, it is designed to process raw gas piped ashore from the Jubilee Field via the **Sanha–Atuabo subsea pipeline**, stripping out condensate, water and impurities to deliver dry, sales-quality gas. Capacity is around 150 million standard cubic feet per day, with room for expansion. From Atuabo, the treated gas travels through the **Ghana Gas Transmission Pipeline** — roughly 111 kilometres of 20-inch line running east to Aboadze, near Takoradi. That pipeline feeds the **Aboadze Thermal Power enclave** (including the TICO and Takoradi International Company plants) and connects onward to the **West African Gas Pipeline** system, which carries gas to Tema and the greater Accra power corridor. Ghana Gas also built and operates the **Atuabo Gas Processing Plant's condensate handling and LPG extraction units**, producing Liquefied Petroleum Gas and condensate for the domestic market. Beyond Atuabo, Ghana Gas has extended its footprint with the **Tema–Aboadze interconnection** and the **Genser/Tema power plant supply lines**, plus the **Ghana Gas Training Academy** at Atuabo for capacity building. The company also operates the **Anokyi and Sanzule pipeline corridors** and maintains compressor stations and metering facilities along the route. In recent years it has pursued the **Western Region Gas Master Plan**, including the **Atuabo Freeport** concept and the **Jubilee South East** and **TEN** field tie-ins to sustain feedstock as Jubilee output matures. The strategic point is simple: Ghana Gas turned flared Jubilee gas into fuel for over 1,000 megawatts of thermal generation, cutting the country's reliance on light crude oil and saving hundreds of millions of dollars annually. As the Akan proverb goes, *"Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a, yenkyi"* — there is nothing wrong with going back for what you left behind; Ghana went back for its own gas, and it now powers the national grid.
