**Independence Square β€” officially Black Star Square β€” is Ghana's premier national monument and ceremonial grounds, located in Accra on the Gulf of Guinea coast, just east of Osu and below Christiansborg Castle.** It was commissioned by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and completed in 1961, and it remains the stage on which Ghana performs its nationhood β€” inaugurations, Independence Day parades, state funerals, papal visits, concerts and national celebrations. The square's defining structures are the **Black Star Gate**, a monumental arch topped by the five-pointed black star (the symbol of African emancipation and the lodestar of Nkrumah's Pan-African vision), and the **Independence Arch**, inscribed with the words "Freedom and Justice" and "AD 1957" β€” the year of Ghana's independence. Flanking the great parade ground are three **spectator stands** built into the landscape, and at the seaward end stands the **Eternal Flame of African Liberation**, lit to honour the continent's freedom struggles. The vast open concourse, capable of holding tens of thousands, was designed for exactly what it hosts: mass ceremony. Historically, the square is bound up with Ghana's role as the **first sub-Saharan African nation to win independence from colonial rule** (6 March 1957). Nkrumah intended it not merely as a parade ground but as a Pan-African monument β€” a place where visiting heads of state, liberation movements and the diaspora could gather under the black star. It has since hosted **Queen Elizabeth II**, **Pope John Paul II** (1980), **President Barack Obama** (2009), and countless state events. Every **7 January** it hosts the presidential inauguration; every **6 March** it hosts the Independence Day parade, with schoolchildren, security services and traditional rulers in full regalia. For visitors, the square is free to walk, best seen in the **early morning or late afternoon** when the light hits the arch and the sea breeze comes off the Gulf. It sits a short drive from **Osu (Oxford Street)**, the **Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park** on the other side of the city centre, and **Christiansborg Castle / Osu Castle** nearby β€” so it fits naturally into a heritage tour of Accra. The **Black Star Gate** is the classic photo spot; the **Eternal Flame** is the emotional one. A fitting Akan thought: *"Abusua pa, fie pa"* β€” a good family makes a good home. Black Star Square is Ghana's national "fie" (home), the courtyard where the whole family of the nation β€” and Africa β€” gathers.
