Ananse Intelligence · Summary

**Kyabobo National Park** is one of Ghana's most spectacular and least-visited protected areas — a rugged mountain park in the **Nkwanta South District of the Oti Region**, tucked into the hills along Ghana's eastern border with **Togo**, roughly 60km northeast of **Nkwanta** town (and about 220km north of Ho, the Volta Regional capital). It sits on the **Togo–Ghana border range**, and its Togolese counterpart across the frontier is **Fazao-Malfakassa National Park** — together they form a transboundary forest–savanna mosaic. The park was **gazetted in 1993** and covers roughly **360 km²**. Its centrepiece is **Mount Djebobo**, Ghana's second-highest peak at about **876 metres**, rising dramatically from the surrounding plains. The name "Kyabobo" comes from the local **Nchumuru/Kyode** people and refers to the mountain area itself. The terrain is a striking mix of **semi-deciduous forest in the valleys and moist savanna woodland on the slopes**, which is why it supports an unusual blend of wildlife — **buffalo, kob, bushbuck, duiker, warthog, baboons, green monkeys**, and over **200 recorded bird species**, including the **white-necked rockfowl** and various hornbills and turacos. It's a genuine birdwatcher's paradise. Culturally, the park is deeply significant. The **Kyabobo hills are home to sacred groves and ancestral shrines** of the Kyode and Nchumuru peoples, and the **Kyabobo Waterfalls** and the **Shiare Falls** are important ritual sites. The park also protects a stretch of the old **German colonial boundary** and the historic **slave trade route** that once ran through the area toward the coast. Practically, Kyabobo is **not a safari-style park** — there are no lodges or game drives. Access is via **Nkwanta**, then a rough road to the **Shiare** and **Kudje** entry points. You need a **4x4**, a **licensed guide from the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission**, and a sense of adventure. Best time to visit is the **dry season (November–March)**. Camping is possible at the park's basic campsite near Shiare. The nearest major town is **Nkwanta**; the nearest city with an airport is **Tamale** (about 200km northwest) or **Ho** (about 220km south). If you're planning a trip, the **Oti Region** also offers **Kyabobo's sister attractions** — the **Shiare Escarpment**, the **Kete-Krachi** ferry crossing on the Volta Lake, and the **Nkwanta** market. A fitting Akan proverb: *"Kwae a yɛnni mu no, yɛnhu ne mu anoma"* — the forest you never enter, you never see its birds. Kyabobo rewards those who make the journey.
