Mount Afadja β often written "Mount Afadjato" β is Ghana's highest mountain, rising to about 885 metres (2,904 ft) in the Volta Region, close to the border with Togo and reachable from Ho, the regional capital. It sits in the Agumatsa Range near the village of Liati Wote, within the same forested belt as the famous Wli Waterfalls. The name comes from the Ewe *Avadzato* β "the mountain where the war-like plant grows" β a reference to the stinging *adja* plant found on its slopes. The peak is technically Ghana's highest point, though it is often paired with nearby Adukrom/Amedzofe hills and the Togo-side Mount Agou (Baumann Peak, ~986 m), which is taller but lies across the border. The climb is a popular day hike from Ho β roughly 45 minutes to 1.5 hours up, depending on pace, through cocoa and coffee farms, secondary forest, and grassland. The trail is steep in places but non-technical; local guides from Liati Wote are required and can be arranged at the trailhead. From the summit on a clear day you can see Lake Volta to the west, the Togo hills to the east, and the surrounding Volta landscape. Practical notes: go early morning for cooler weather and better visibility; carry water, wear sturdy shoes, and expect a modest guide fee plus a community/entry fee. The best season is the dry months (roughly November to March), when the paths are firmer and the views clearer. Many visitors combine Afadja with Wli Waterfalls and the Amedzofe canopy walk for a full Volta weekend. As the Akan say, *"Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a, yenkyi"* β there is nothing wrong with going back to fetch what you forgot; and there is nothing wrong with climbing slowly, so long as you reach the top.
