Ananse Intelligence Β· Summary

Mount Afadja β€” often written "Mount Afadjato" β€” is the highest mountain in Ghana, rising to about 885 metres (2,904 ft) in the Hohoe area of the Volta Region, close to the border with Togo. The mountain sits in the Agumatsa Range, near the village of Liati Wote and the famous Wli Waterfalls. The name comes from the Ewe "Avadzato" β€” "ava" (war) and "dzo" (to fight) β€” linked to a local legend of a war fought at its foot, and to the creeping plant "ava" that grows on its slopes. The peak is actually shared with Togo: the summit ridge straddles the frontier, and on the Togolese side the same massif is known as Mount Agou (Mont Agou), which is Togo's highest point at about 986 metres. So Ghana's highest is the Ghana-side summit of a cross-border mountain. For hikers, Afadja is a popular but genuinely demanding day climb β€” roughly two to three hours up and back, steep and rocky in places, best done in the early morning during the dry season (roughly November to March) to avoid heat and slippery mud. From the top you get sweeping views over the Volta Region, Lake Volta in the distance, and into Togo. Local guides from Liati Wote and nearby communities lead the trail, and the area pairs well with a visit to Wli Waterfalls, the Tafi Atome monkey sanctuary, and the mountain villages around Hohoe. A small point of pride and a caution: Afadja is Ghana's highest, but it is modest by continental standards β€” a reminder that Ghana's drama lies more in its forests, waterfalls and coastline than in alpine heights. As the Akan say, "Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a, yenkyi" β€” there is no shame in going back for what you left behind; and many climbers do return, because the view from Afadja is worth the second trip.
