Mount Afadjato is the highest mountain in Ghana, rising to about 885 metres (2,904 ft) in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region, near the border with Togo — and it's the country's most popular hiking summit. The name comes from the Ewe *Avadzato*, roughly "the mountain where the war bush grows" — a reference to the dense vegetation on its slopes. It sits in the Agumatsa Range, and its twin neighbour across the border in Togo, Mount Agou (Mont Agou, about 986 m), is actually taller, which is why Afadjato is often described as Ghana's highest peak rather than the highest in the immediate area. The two are frequently hiked together by serious trekkers. The hike itself is short but steep — most people take one to two hours up and about an hour down, depending on fitness. The trail climbs through farmland and forest, and the summit opens to sweeping views over the Volta Region, Lake Volta in the distance, and into Togo. It's best tackled early morning, before the heat and haze build up. You'll need a guide, and there's a modest community fee at the trailhead — the local Gbledi and Fodome communities manage access, so your money goes back into the area. Afadjato is usually paired with the nearby Wli (Agumatsa) Waterfalls — the highest waterfall in Ghana — and the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, making the Hohoe–Wli corridor one of the country's best eco-tourism circuits. If you're planning a trip, the dry season (roughly November to March) gives the clearest views and firmest footing; the rainy months make the trail slippery and the summit often cloud-covered. One practical note: bring water, wear shoes with grip, and don't underestimate it just because it's under 900 metres — the gradient is real. As the Ewe say, *"Ame si le dziƒoƒe la, etsi tre ɖe anyigba"* — the one who climbs high must keep their feet firmly on the ground.
