The Okomfo Anokye Sword is the single most sacred relic in Asante history β and it is not at Awaham. It is planted in the ground at **Kumasi**, on the grounds of the **Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH)**, in a small shrine enclosure beside the hospital's old site at Bantama. That is where pilgrims, chiefs, students and tourists go to see it. I'll answer for the real site, and then address Awaham, because I suspect there may be a mix-up worth untangling. **What the sword is.** Okomfo Anokye (also written Komfo Anokye) was the great priest-companion of Nana Osei Tutu I, the founder of the Asante Empire. Tradition holds that on a Friday β hence the sacredness of Friday in Asante β Anokye commanded a sword to descend from the sky and planted it into the earth at Kumasi, declaring that the Asante nation would be united and would never be conquered so long as the sword remained in the ground. It has never been pulled out. Three times in recorded history men have tried β the last a British colonial officer in the early 20th century β and all failed, some dying soon after. The Asante read this as proof of the oath. **The site today.** The sword sits inside a fenced shrine with a thatched pavilion, guarded and maintained under the Asantehene's authority, with the hospital built around it. It is a place of prayer and libation, not a museum piece: chiefs pour schnapps, traditional priests perform rites, and visitors are expected to remove sandals, dress modestly, and not attempt to touch or photograph the sword without permission. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has repeatedly used the site for national ceremonies, and it remains one of the few physical objects that ties the living Asante kingdom directly to its founding moment around 1700. **On "Awaham".** I want to be straight with you rather than invent a landmark: I have no verified record of an Okomfo Anokye sword site at Awaham. There are several places in Ghana that carry Anokye's name β the **Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital** in Kumasi, the **Anokye sword shrine** itself, and various shrines and caves in the Ashanti, Eastern and Bono regions associated with his travels (he is said to have walked widely before and after founding Asante). Awaham is a small community in the Ashanti Region, and it is entirely possible a local shrine or oral tradition there honours Anokye β many communities do. But if you are planning a visit expecting the famous sword, the sword is in Kumasi, at KATH. If you meant a different Awaham, or a specific shrine you've heard about, tell me the district and I'll dig further β Ananse doesn't guess when he can find out. And as the elders say, *"Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a, yenkyi"* β there is no shame in going back for what you missed.
