Ananse Intelligence · Summary

Oxford Street in Osu is Accra's most famous commercial and entertainment strip — a roughly one-kilometre stretch running through Osu (also called Christiansborg), the historic quarter just east of the city centre, and the beating heart of modern Accra's shopping, dining and nightlife. The street's formal name is **Ako Adjei Street**, renamed in honour of Nii Ako Adjei, a member of the Big Six and one of Ghana's founding nationalists — but almost nobody calls it that. "Oxford Street" stuck, a colonial-era nickname that survived because the strip genuinely became Ghana's answer to a great shopping boulevard. It runs from the Danquah Circle area down toward the Osu Castle and Independence Avenue end, lined with banks, boutiques, restaurants, bars, hotels and street vendors. What makes it distinctive is the layering. You'll find international brands and modern malls-style retail sitting beside open-air hawkers selling everything from phone credit to roasted plantain; Lebanese, Chinese, Italian, Indian and Ghanaian kitchens within a few hundred metres of each other; and a nightlife scene — pubs, lounges, live-music spots — that keeps the area busy well past midnight, especially on weekends. It's where Accra's middle class, the diaspora, expatriates and tourists all converge. Osu itself is one of the oldest parts of Accra, home to the Ga people and the Osu Mantse stool, with Christiansborg Castle (now the seat of the Presidency) anchoring its eastern edge. So Oxford Street sits on deep Ga history while functioning as the city's most cosmopolitan commercial artery — a fitting symbol of Accra generally. Practically: it's walkable but traffic-heavy, best enjoyed on foot in the evening when the heat drops and the street comes alive. If you're heading there, expect to haggle at the roadside stalls, pay fixed prices in the shops, and keep small cedis handy. As the Akan say, *"Akoko nan tia ba na ɛnkum no"* — the hen steps on her chick but does not kill it: Osu's old bones carry the weight of all this new commerce without losing themselves.
