**Prestea** is a historic gold-mining town in Ghana's Western Region, in the Prestea-Huni Valley District β and yes, it sits just north of its famous twin, **Tarkwa**, the two forming the heart of Ghana's gold belt. Prestea grew up around gold. The town's mines were worked long before colonial times, but it was in the late 19th and 20th centuries that Prestea became a major industrial mining centre. For much of its life the mines were run by **State Gold Mining Corporation** and later **Prestea Gold Resources**, and today the area's concessions fall largely under **Golden Star Resources** (Wassa and Prestea underground operations) and neighbouring operators. The deep Prestea underground mine is one of the more storied in Ghana β generations of families in the town have lived off the shafts. Culturally, Prestea is a classic mining town: a mix of indigenous Wassa people and migrants from all over Ghana and beyond who came for the gold. The dominant language is **Wassa (a Fante-Akan dialect)**, alongside Twi, Ewe, Ga and others. The town observes the **Wassa Akropong** traditional area's customs, and its people are known for hard work, resilience and a strong miners' identity. Economically, Prestea has felt the full cycle of mining β boom years when the mines thrived, and hard years when operations scaled down or closed, leaving unemployment and galamsey (small-scale illegal mining) as persistent challenges. The **River Ankobra** runs through the area and has suffered heavily from illegal mining pollution, a major environmental concern for the district. Getting there: Prestea lies roughly **15β20 km north of Tarkwa** on the road toward **Bogoso** and the coast, and it's connected by road to **Takoradi** and **Kumasi**. It's part of the Western Region's 16-region Ghana map, and together with Tarkwa it forms one of the country's most important mineral corridors. A fitting Akan thought: *"Sika ye mogya"* β gold is blood β a proverb that captures exactly what Prestea's history has been: wealth won from the earth, and the human cost that comes with it. If you want, I can go deeper on Prestea's mine history, the Ankobra pollution fight, or the Wassa traditional area β just say which.
