Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly is the local government authority that administers Sefwi Wiawso, the capital of the Western North Region of Ghana β and since the creation of that region in 2019, it has doubled as the seat of the Regional Coordinating Council. Sefwi Wiawso itself is the traditional capital of the Sefwi (Sehwi) people, an Akan subgroup whose Omanhene sits on the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council stool. The town lies in the forest belt of south-western Ghana, roughly 90 km from Kumasi via Bibiani, and is the commercial hub for the surrounding cocoa, timber and gold-mining districts. The Sefwi area is famous for its gold β the Bibiani and Chirano mines are neighbours β and for producing some of Ghana's finest cocoa. The Assembly was originally constituted as Sefwi Wiawso District Assembly under the Local Government Act of 1993 (Act 462), then elevated to Municipal status in 2008 by Legislative Instrument (L.I. 1904), and further re-constituted when the Western North Region was carved out of the Western Region in February 2019. It is one of nine assemblies in the Western North Region (Sefwi Wiawso Municipal, Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal, Aowin Municipal, Juaboso, Bodi, Akontombra, Suaman, Bia East and Bia West). Structurally, the Assembly follows Ghana's standard local governance architecture: a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) appointed by the President with the approval of the Assembly members; a Presiding Member elected from among the members; and a body of elected and appointed members who sit in the General Assembly and in sub-committees (Finance & Administration, Works, Social Services, Justice & Security, etc.). Below it are the usual sub-structures β Zonal Councils and Unit Committees β which handle grassroots mobilisation and revenue collection. Its core mandate covers the usual local government functions: local revenue mobilisation (property rates, business operating permits, market tolls), sanitation and waste management, feeder road maintenance, basic education infrastructure, health (CHPS compounds, clinics), local economic development, and physical planning and building permits. Because Sefwi Wiawso is the regional capital, the Assembly also hosts and supports the Western North Regional Minister's office, the Regional Coordinating Council, and regional offices of the various sector ministries. If you want the current MCE, the sitting Presiding Member, the Assembly's official contact details or its latest budget and fee-fixing resolutions, those change with each appointment cycle β the surest place is the Assembly's own offices at Sefwi Wiawso or the Western North Regional Coordinating Council. I can walk you through how to reach them, or help you add the Assembly as a listing on GhanaMann's directory if it isn't there yet.
