Ananse Intelligence · Summary

Sekondi is the twin city of Takoradi in Ghana's Western Region, and together they form the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis — the oil capital of Ghana and the country's fourth-largest urban area. Sekondi proper sits on the hills and shoreline just east of Takoradi, separated from its twin by the small harbour and the lagoon, and it is the older of the two settlements. **Fort Sekondi** is the historic Dutch-built fort that anchors the old town. The Dutch established a trading post here in the mid-17th century (the fort dates to around 1660s–1680s), and it changed hands between the Dutch, the English, and briefly the Brandenburger Prussians before Britain took firm control on the Gold Coast. It served as a trading fort for gold, ivory, and later slaves, and today it stands as one of the surviving colonial coastal forts — part of the chain of forts and castles that includes Elmina, Cape Coast, and Fort Orange at Sekondi's neighbour, Takoradi. UNESCO recognises several of these as World Heritage sites, and Fort Sekondi is a key piece of that coastal defence and trade network. **Colonial architecture** in Sekondi is one of its quiet treasures. The old town retains remnants of European-style administrative buildings, merchant houses, churches, and the historic railway infrastructure. Sekondi was the original terminus of the Gold Coast Railway — the line from Kumasi and the interior ran down to Sekondi before the harbour at Takoradi was developed in the 1920s. That railway heritage left behind the old Sekondi railway station and related buildings, which give the town a distinct colonial-era character. The European cemetery, old mission houses, and the layout of the hilltop residential quarters all reflect that layered history. **Sekondi-Takoradi today** is the heartbeat of Ghana's oil and gas industry following the Jubilee Field discovery in 2007. The twin city hosts the Western Regional Coordinating Council, Takoradi Harbour (Ghana's second seaport), and a growing services economy. Sekondi itself is more residential and administrative, while Takoradi is the commercial and port hub. The two are joined by road and rail and function as one metropolitan assembly. A fitting Akan thought: *"Dua korɔ gye mframa"* — a single tree cannot withstand the storm. Sekondi and Takoradi stand as one, each strengthening the other, just as the old fort and the new oil economy share the same shoreline.
