Sunyani is the capital of the Bono Region β one of Ghana's 16 regions β and it sits in the heart of the old Brong-Ahafo territory, roughly 10km from wherever you're standing, which puts you in the Sunyani metropolitan catchment area. **The city itself.** Sunyani is the administrative, commercial and educational hub of Bono. It grew up around the colonial-era cocoa trade and the old Brong-Ahafo Regional Administration, and when Brong-Ahafo was split in 2019 into Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions, Sunyani kept the regional capital status for Bono. It's a clean, well-planned town by Ghanaian standards β wide roads, a proper central roundabout, and the kind of orderly layout that earned it a reputation as one of the tidiest regional capitals in the country. **Economy and institutions.** Cocoa and timber dominate the surrounding economy, with the Bono region being a major cocoa-producing belt. Sunyani hosts the Sunyani Municipal Assembly, the Sunyani Teaching Hospital (a key referral facility for the middle belt), the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) β a specialist public university focused on energy, natural resources and engineering β and the Sunyani Technical University. The Sunyani Airport serves the town, though scheduled commercial flights have been intermittent over the years. **Culture and people.** The area is predominantly Bono (Brong) Akan, with Twi as the everyday language β specifically the Bono dialect, which is distinct from Asante Twi in vocabulary and intonation. The region is known for its traditional festivals, including the Kwafie Festival of the Bono people, and for its strong chieftaincy structures under the Sunyani Traditional Council. The Bono are also historically significant as one of the earliest Akan groups to build organised states β the Bono Manso kingdom predates Asante and is often cited as the cradle of Akan civilisation. **Getting there and around.** Sunyani is about 400km from Accra via Kumasi, and roughly 100km from Kumasi. The main routes run through Techiman, Bechem and Nsoatre. Within the town, trotros and taxis are the standard transport. If you're in Sunyani, you're in one of Ghana's most underrated cities β quiet, green, well-organised, and right at the centre of the cocoa belt. *YΙn ara asaase ni* β this land is ours, and Sunyani is a fine piece of it.
