Takoradi Market Circle is the historic heart of Sekondi-Takoradi β the bustling traditional commercial centre of Ghana's Western Regional capital, and one of the busiest open-air trading hubs in the country. **Where it sits.** Market Circle lies in the old Takoradi township, a short walk from the harbour area and the Takoradi railway station. The circle is literally that β a roundabout with roads radiating outward, and the market spilling into the surrounding streets. It's the anchor of Takoradi's central business district, flanked by banks, lorry stations, and colonial-era commercial buildings. **What it is.** It's a traditional market in the fullest Ghanaian sense: hundreds of traders β mostly women β selling foodstuffs, fresh fish and seafood (Takoradi being a coastal city, the fish section is legendary), vegetables, provisions, cloth, beads, cosmetics, household goods, and cooked food. It's also a wholesale point where produce from the Western Region's farming districts β cocoa-belt towns, rubber and oil palm areas, and fishing communities β funnels into the city. **Why it matters.** Sekondi-Takoradi is Ghana's oil city since the Jubilee Field came onstream in 2010, but Market Circle predates all of that by decades. It grew with the Takoradi Harbour, which opened in 1928 under Governor Gordon Guggisberg β the same Guggisberg who built Achimota School and Korle Bu. The harbour made Takoradi a trade gateway, and Market Circle became where that trade met everyday life. It remains the commercial pulse of the twin city: if you want to know the price of fish, gari, or tomatoes in the Western Region, you ask at Market Circle. **Practical notes.** It's busiest in the early morning and late afternoon. The area is congested β trotros, taxis, and hand-carts compete for space β and the city has periodically undertaken redevelopment and decongestion plans for the circle. If you're visiting, go early, carry small cash, and expect the full sensory experience: the smell of smoked fish, the calls of traders, the press of the crowd. There's an Akan saying that fits a place like this: *"Onipa firi soro besi a, obesi onipa kurom"* β a person descends from the sky to settle in another person's town. Market Circle is exactly that kind of town-square: a place where everyone from the region eventually passes through, and where the whole Western Region's commerce comes down to meet.
