Ananse Intelligence · Summary

Takoradi Market Circle is the beating commercial heart of Sekondi-Takoradi — the twin-city capital of the Western Region — and the anchor of its Central Business District (CBD). It is one of Ghana's oldest and busiest trading hubs, a circular market complex ringed by shops, banks, lorry stations and colonial-era buildings, sitting at the centre of a city built on cocoa, timber, gold, and now oil and gas. **The Market Circle itself.** The name is literal: the market is laid out in a great circle, with stalls and sheds radiating around a central open space, and a ring road (Market Circle Road) wrapping the whole complex. Traders sell everything — fresh produce from the surrounding Western Region farms, fish from the Takoradi harbour and Sekondi fishing beaches, cloth, provisions, hardware, cosmetics, phone accessories. It is loud, dense and endlessly active from dawn, and it is the reference point by which everyone in Sekondi-Takoradi gives directions: "I dey Market Circle." **The CBD around it.** The Central Business District clusters tightly around the Circle. Within a short walk you find the main commercial banks and their branches, insurance offices, the big trading houses, pharmacies, and the older two- and three-storey commercial buildings that date from the colonial and early post-independence boom. The area also hosts transport terminals that feed the city and the wider region — trotros and taxis linking to Takoradi Harbour, the Sekondi railway station, the main lorry park, and onward routes to Axim, Tarkwa, Elubo and Kumasi. **Why it matters economically.** Sekondi-Takoradi is Ghana's third-largest urban economy and the country's oil city since the Jubilee Field came onstream in 2010. The CBD around Market Circle serves as the retail and services spine for that economy — the place where oil-and-gas workers, port staff, cocoa and timber traders, and ordinary shoppers all converge. The Takoradi Harbour and the Takoradi Airport sit a short distance away, reinforcing the district's role as the Western Region's commercial gateway. **History and character.** The market grew out of the colonial development of Sekondi and Takoradi as railway and harbour towns in the early 20th century — Sekondi as the older administrative and railway town, Takoradi as the deep-water port town. Market Circle became the shared commercial ground between them, and it retains that role today. The architecture around it — arcaded shopfronts, old warehouses, mission-era buildings — gives the district a distinctly older, mercantile feel compared with newer Accra-style malls. **Practical notes.** The Circle is congested, especially on market days and during rush hours; parking is difficult and hawking spills onto the surrounding streets. Redevelopment and modernisation of the market and CBD have been discussed by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) for years, but the Circle remains, for now, a traditional open market at heart. If you're visiting, go early morning for the freshest produce and the calmest traffic, and keep small change handy. As the Akan put it, *"Dua korɔ gyina hɔ a, ɛnnyɛ kwae"* — one tree standing alone does not make a forest. Market Circle is that one great tree; the whole CBD is the forest that grew around it.
