Ananse Intelligence · Summary

Tema is Ghana's industrial heartbeat and home to the country's largest seaport — the Tema Port, which handles the bulk of Ghana's import and export trade and anchors the Tema Industrial Area, the biggest concentration of factories in the nation. **The Port.** Tema Port sits on the Gulf of Guinea about 30 km east of Accra, in the Greater Accra Region. It opened in 1962 as part of Nkrumah's grand vision — the Tema township itself was built from scratch in the 1950s and 60s to serve the new harbour and the aluminium industry. Today the port has two main facilities: the older Tema Harbour and the newer **MPS Terminal 3**, a deep-water container terminal operated by Meridian Port Services (a partnership involving Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, APM Terminals and Bolloré). Terminal 3, commissioned around 2019–2020, dramatically expanded container capacity and can berth the largest post-Panamax vessels. The port handles containers, general cargo, bulk cargo (cocoa, timber, clinker, petroleum products) and serves landlocked neighbours — Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger — through the Tema–Ouagadougou corridor. **The Industrial Area.** Tema's industrial zone grew up around the port and includes some of Ghana's most storied enterprises: the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) smelter, Ghana Cement (Ghacem), Nestlé Ghana, Unilever, PZ Cussons, Fan Milk, Guinness Ghana, and a host of food-processing, steel, paint, plastics and logistics companies. The Tema Free Zones enclave (under the Ghana Free Zones Authority) hosts export-oriented manufacturers. The Tema Metropolitan Assembly governs the city, which is also a major fishing harbour — the Tema fishing harbour is one of Ghana's busiest. **Why it matters.** Tema is the engine room of Ghana's trade: a huge share of customs revenue, import/export volume and manufacturing output flows through it. It's also a commuter city tightly linked to Accra via the Tema Motorway (the Accra–Tema expressway, Ghana's first motorway, opened in 1965). A fitting Akan thought: *"Aboa a ɔwɔ kwae mu na ɔnim kwae mu nsɛm"* — the animal in the forest knows the forest's affairs. Tema knows trade the way few places in West Africa do. If you want, I can go deeper on any thread — the history of Tema's construction, how MPS Terminal 3 changed shipping, the TOR story, or the Free Zones regime.
