Ananse Intelligence · Summary

The University of Ghana, Legon — Ghana's premier university — sits about 2 km north-east of central Accra, in the Legon district of the Greater Accra Region, and its main campus is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the country. **The basics.** UG was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, affiliated to the University of London, and became a fully independent university in 1961 under Kwame Nkrumah's government. It is the oldest and largest of Ghana's public universities, with its main campus at Legon, plus the Korle Bu campus (medical school), the Accra City campus, and other satellite sites. **The campus itself.** Legon is famous for its rolling green lawns, the iconic Balme Library, the Great Hall with its distinctive tower, Commonwealth Hall and Legon Hall (the two oldest halls), Akuafo Hall, Volta Hall, Mensah Sarbah Hall, and the newer Jubilee Hall. The campus is essentially its own small town — lecture theatres, halls of residence, banks, a hospital, a botanical garden, sports fields, and the Legon Botanical Gardens nearby. **Getting there.** From central Accra it's roughly a 20–30 minute drive depending on traffic, via the Legon–Madina road or the Tetteh Quarshie–Legon stretch. Tro-tros and taxis from Madina, Achimota, Circle and 37 run constantly to the Legon gate. The campus is also served by the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on the eastern side. **Why it matters.** Legon has produced a huge share of Ghana's presidents, chief justices, diplomats, academics and business leaders. It hosts the Institute of African Studies, the School of Law, the Business School, and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research — one of West Africa's leading biomedical research centres. Its alumni network spans the continent and the diaspora.
