Ananse Intelligence · Summary

**Kintampo Waterfalls** is one of Ghana's most spectacular natural attractions — a multi-tiered cascade on the Pumpum River in the Bono East Region, about 4 km north of Kintampo town and roughly midway between Kumasi and Tamale on the old Kumasi–Tamale road. The falls drop in three main stages, the tallest being the final plunge of about 25 metres into a cool pool below. The upper tiers tumble over rocks shaded by tall trees, and the whole site sits in a forested ravine that stays green even deep into the harmattan. Locals know it as *Kintampo* — from the Akan *kɛntɛn* (a type of tree) and *mpɔ* (a place of), meaning "the place of the kɛntɛn trees," a name the town and the falls share. Historically the site is tied to the **Kintampo culture**, a Stone Age archaeological tradition (roughly 2000–500 BCE) whose artefacts — stone tools, pottery, and evidence of early farming — were first excavated in the Kintampo area, making the district one of the cradles of settled agriculture in West Africa. The falls themselves have long been a sacred spot for the people of the area, with traditional rites performed at the river before the site was developed for tourism. For visitors today, the experience is straightforward and rewarding. A short walk from the car park leads down a stepped path to viewing platforms at each tier; the lower pool is popular for a (careful) swim, though currents can be strong after rain. The best time to visit is **November to March**, when the water is clearest and the paths are driest; the rainy season (June–September) swells the falls to a dramatic roar but makes the rocks slippery. Entry is ticketed, with guides available, and the site is managed under the Ghana Tourism Authority's umbrella. Practical notes: it's an easy stop-off if you're travelling the Kumasi–Tamale corridor, and it pairs well with the **Kintampo Monkey Sanctuary** and the **Kintampo Heritage Museum** nearby. Bring cash for the gate, wear shoes with grip, and don't leave litter — the Pumpum feeds communities downstream. As the Akan say, *"Obi nnim nea ɔte aseɛ da"* — no one knows the day they will die — so enjoy the water while you're there, but respect it. If you want current gate fees, opening hours, or road conditions for a specific date, tell me when you plan to go and I'll dig for the latest.
